Blue light absorber UV-401 for anti-blue lenses, automotive film materials anti-blue light coatings

Blue Light Absorber UV-401

UV-401 is a high-efficiency blue light absorber supplied as a light-yellow powder. Featuring a sharp, precision absorption peak at 401±2nm, it is specially engineered to block high-energy visible (HEV) light and UV rays in the 380–420nm range.

Unlike broad-spectrum absorbers, the absorption curve of UV-401 drops sharply after 420nm. This unique optical property ensures excellent blocking of harmful purple/blue light while allowing higher visible light transmittance, preventing the unwanted yellowing effect often seen in traditional anti-blue light additives.

It offers excellent thermal stability and solubility, making it ideal for high-end optical lenses, display coatings, and automotive films.

Key Technical Specifications

  • Appearance: Light yellow solid

  • Absorption Max (λmax): 401±2nm (in MC)

  • Solubility: Soluble in MA, EtOH, EGE, MC, TCM; Insoluble in EA, BZ, TL

  • Blocking Efficiency: High absorption at 401nm peak for targeted blue light protection

Core Advantages

  1. Precision Blue Light Cut-off: Sharp absorption peak stops harmful HEV light without cutting unnecessary visible light.
  2. Low Yellowing & High Transparency: Maintains clarity and color neutrality in optical plastics and clear coatings.
  3. High Thermal Stability: Withstands high-temperature plastic extrusion and injection molding processes.
  4. Low Dosage, High Efficiency: Achieves target optical performance even at low addition levels.

Applications

UV-401 offers excellent compatibility with PC, PMMA, PET, PA, and various coating resins.

  1. Optical Lenses & Eyewear
Used in the manufacturing of anti-blue light glasses and smart wearable lenses (AR/VR). It reduces retinal damage and eye strain while keeping the lenses transparent and aesthetically clear.

  2. Display Screens & Electronic Coatings
Ideal for optical clear adhesives (OCA), screen protectors, and anti-scratch hard coatings for smartphones, tablets, and gaming monitors to enhance visual comfort.

  3. Automotive & Window Films
Incorporated into solar control films, PSA (pressure-sensitive adhesive) layers, and automotive transparent films to block harmful UV/HEV light, reduce glare, and protect interiors from fading.

  4. Engineering Plastics
Excellent as a functional additive or masterbatch ingredient for optical-grade plastics requiring blue light filtering combined with high thermal stability during processing.

Suggested Usage

  • Coatings and Adhesive Films: Typically 0.1% – 0.5% by weight (can be adjusted up to 2–5% for extremely thin films).
  • Plastics & Masterbatch: Required dosage depends on product thickness and specific resin. Customers are advised to conduct small-scale optical testing to determine the optimal formula.
