NIR982 985 nm Near-Infrared Absorbing Dye for Plastics, Inks and Optical Materials

NIR982 is a green-powder near-infrared absorbing dye with a nominal absorption maximum at 985 ± 2 nm when measured in MA. The absorption spectrum shows a broad principal near-infrared absorption band centered around 985 nm.
Nichwell offers two grades of NIR982 for different processing and application requirements:
- NIR982 High-Temperature Grade: thermal resistance up to 280–295°C, suitable for PC, PMMA and other engineering plastics.
- NIR982T Ink Grade: thermal resistance up to 240–250°C, suitable for security printing, functional inks and coatings.

As shown in the absorption spectrum, NIR982 exhibits a robust and broad absorption peak around 985nm, effectively shielding near-infrared energy. Crucially, the absorption drops to near-zero in the 500–700nm range. This indicates phenomenal visible light transmittance, allowing end-products (like optical lenses or security films) to maintain high visual clarity without color distortion.
Grade Selection:
NIR982 High-Temperature Grade
NIR982 is the high-temperature grade designed for incorporation into PC, PMMA and other engineering plastics. It offers thermal resistance of up to 280–295°C, making it suitable for applications involving elevated processing temperatures, injection molding and NIR-functional plastic components. Typical applications include NIR-absorbing plastic parts, optical housings, functional panels, sensor components and specialty films.
NIR982T Ink Grade
NIR982T is the ink-grade version developed for security printing, anti-counterfeiting inks, coatings and other solution-processable systems. It offers thermal resistance of up to 240–250°C and can be formulated for NIR-readable authentication features. When properly formulated, NIR982T can provide low-visible-contrast or visually unobtrusive NIR markers that can be detected using suitable near-infrared readers. Final visible appearance and detection performance depend on the ink formulation, substrate, dye concentration and printing process.
Key Applications of NIR Absorbing Dye NIR982
PC, PMMA and Engineering Plastics
The NIR982 high-temperature grade is suitable for PC, PMMA and other engineering plastics requiring near-infrared absorption. It can be evaluated for injection-molded components, functional housings, optical parts, sensor windows and NIR-shielding plastic products.
Security Printing & Anti-Counterfeiting
The ink-grade variant (NIR982T, stable up to 240°C–250°C) acts as an invisible covert marker. Undetectable to the naked eye due to its low visible absorption, it produces a strong 985nm signal for machine-readable authentication in banknotes, passports, and luxury brand protection labels.
IR-Absorbing Filters and Optical Componzents
NIR982 can be incorporated into optical filters, functional films and polymer-based optical components to manage near-infrared transmission around the 985 nm region. Visible-light transmission, haze and filtering performance depend on the dye loading, optical thickness, polymer matrix and filter design.
NIR Sensors and Detection Systems
NIR982 may be used as a functional absorbing material in NIR sensors, optical detection systems, analytical instruments and smart optical devices. It can assist with spectral selection, background-light management and optical signal optimization.
Coatings and Functional Films
NIR982 can be added to coatings and functional films for NIR shielding, optical filtering and customized light-management applications in automotive, architectural, electronic and industrial systems.
NIR Signature Management and Stealth Applications
Because NIR982 provides defined absorption near 985 nm, it can be evaluated in specialty coatings and materials designed for near-infrared signature management. Performance should be verified according to the substrate, coating thickness, dye loading and target detection system.
Optoelectronic and Thin-Film Research
Because of its solution processability and near-infrared absorption, NIR982 may also be evaluated in research applications involving organic optoelectronics, thin-film devices and NIR-responsive materials. Suitability for a specific device architecture should be confirmed experimentally.
