Applications and Processing Guidance
Plastics and Rubber Applications
Selected thermochromic pigments can be evaluated for transparent or translucent plastic and rubber systems, including PP, PE, ABS, PVC, silicone and compatible resin systems.
Typical applications include:
- Temperature-sensitive spoons
- Color-changing toys
- Plastic containers
- Silicone products
- Electronic device housings
- Overheat warning components
- Promotional products
The typical dosage is 0.5%–2.0% by weight. For deeper colors or colored substrates, the dosage may be adjusted up to approximately 2.5%–3.0% after testing.
Lower processing temperatures, shorter residence times and low-shear mixing are recommended to protect the microcapsules.
Recommended Form: Powder Grade (D50: 2–5 µm) | Standard Dosage: 0.8%–1.5%
Printing Inks and Coatings
Thermochromic pigments can be evaluated for compatible screen-printing, flexographic, gravure and coating systems.
Typical applications include:
- Anti-counterfeiting labels
- Temperature-warning labels
- Interactive packaging
- Textile printing
- Security inks
- Heat-sensitive graphics
- Overheat indicators
- Tamper-evident labels
Compatibility with the binder, solvent, pH, curing temperature and printing process must be tested before production.
For water-based systems, a pH range of approximately 2–8 is generally recommended. Avoid aggressive solvents, incompatible short-chain alcohols and excessive shear.
Recommended Form: Slurry / Liquid Dispersion (Water-based) or Micronized Powder | Standard Dosage: 5%–12%

Textiles and Apparel
Thermochromic pigments can be incorporated into compatible textile-printing systems to create reversible color-changing designs.
Typical applications include:
- T-shirts and sweatshirts
- Sportswear
- Shoes and hats
- Fashion accessories
- Towels and textile products
- Promotional apparel
Wash resistance and service life depend on the binder, printing process, curing conditions and protective coating.
Packaging and Security Printing
Thermochromic pigments can create heat-activated verification and interactive effects in compatible packaging, labels and printing systems.
Typical applications include:
- Brand-protection labels
- Authentication marks
- Heat-sensitive packaging
- Tickets and certificates
- Tamper-evident labels
- Promotional graphics
Custom activation temperatures and color transitions can be evaluated according to the required verification method.
Industrial Temperature Indicators
Reversible pigments provide repeatable visual temperature indication, while irreversible products can record a specified temperature-exposure event.
Typical applications include:
- Electrical equipment
- Battery systems
- Electronic components
- Industrial machinery
- Safety warning labels
- Overheat indicators
- Sterilization indicators
- Temperature-traceability labels
For permanent over-temperature recording, select a permanently irreversible product.
Processing & Formulating Best Practices
Optimizing UV & Weather Resistance:
While leuco-dye microcapsules are naturally light-sensitive, exterior stability can be effectively prolonged. For outdoor packaging, automotive trims, or architectural signage, Nichwell recommends co-formulating with compatible hindered amine light stabilizers (HALS) / UV absorbers, or applying an acrylic/PU protective clear topcoat. Our lab can advise on stabilizing packages based on your accelerated weathering targets.
Dispersion & Shear Management:
To preserve the 0.2–0.5 µm protective polymer shell, thermochromic powders should be introduced during the final blending stage using low-to-medium shear dispersion (e.g., paddle mixers or standard dissolver disks at controlled RPM). Bead milling and three-roll grinding are unnecessary due to the pigment’s uniform pre-micronized particle size (D50 2–10 µm).
Thermal Processing Envelope (Up to 240°C):
Nichwell’s high-heat grades are engineered to withstand peak short-term processing temperatures of 230°C–240°C during injection molding and extrusion. To ensure 100% color-recovery yield in PP, PE, or ABS, we advise keeping residence times in the barrel under 2–3 minutes and adopting a reversed temperature profile. Contact our plastics engineering team for recommended barrel settings.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q1: Do you supply Thermochromic Powder for direct compounding, or pre-dispersed forms?
A: Yes. Nichwell supplies microencapsulated thermochromic powder as our primary industrial grade for plastic extrusion, masterbatch compounding, and dry blending. For liquid systems, we also provide compatible thermochromic slurry and liquid dispersions to eliminate high-shear grinding risks in water-based inks and coatings.
Q2: Can Nichwell’s Thermochromic Pigment replace conventional Thermochromic Dye?
A: Yes, and in most industrial formulations, microencapsulated thermochromic pigment is technically superior to standard thermochromic dye. While traditional soluble dyes suffer from solvent leaching, migration, and lower thermal thresholds, our encapsulated pigment system isolates the leuco chemistry, offering higher heat tolerance (up to 230°C–240°C) and broad compatibility with PP, PE, ABS, and acrylic systems.
Q3: What activation temperatures are available, and can they be customized?
A: Standard reversible stock grades are available from 5°C to 70°C (including popular body-heat 31°C and scald-warning 45°C). Irreversible grades are standard at 50°C to 120°C. Custom activation thresholds from approximately -10°C to 120°C can be engineered based on your target resin, solvent system, and volume requirements.
Q4: Can these pigments tolerate high-temperature plastic injection molding (e.g., 230°C–240°C)?
A: Yes. Nichwell’s high-heat plastic grades feature reinforced microcapsule shells that tolerate peak short-term processing temperatures of 230°C–240°C under controlled conditions. We recommend low-shear screw configurations, keeping residence times under 2–3 minutes. Recommended dosage is typically 0.5%–2.0% by weight.
Q5: Are your thermochromic pigments compliant with RoHS, REACH, and safety regulations?
A: Yes. Nichwell operates under a certified ISO 9001 quality management system governing all batch inspections and packaging standards. For the European market, our thermochromic grades are EU REACH compliant through full upstream authorized documentation and designated Only Representative (OR) coverage, ensuring hassle-free clearance and regulatory peace of mind. Full RoHS verification, Safety Data Sheets (SDS per OSHA/GHS), and official compliance certificates are available upon request for regulatory audits.
Q6: What is the minimum order quantity (MOQ), and can we request lab evaluation samples?
A: We supply 50g–100g test sample kits alongside complete TDS/SDS to qualified industrial R&D teams, dispatched within 48 hours. For commercial orders, standard in-stock grades have an MOQ as low as 1–5 kg, while custom activation batches are evaluated on a project basis.
